Not all thermostats talk to a boiler the same way. A basic thermostat is a simple on/off switch. An OpenTherm-compatible smart thermostat has an actual conversation with the boiler, and that difference is worth understanding before you decide whether to pay for the upgrade.
On/off vs modulating control
A standard thermostat does one thing: when the room's too cold, it switches the boiler fully on; once the room's warm enough, it switches it fully off. The boiler always fires at full output, however small the gap between current and target temperature, which wastes gas and causes temperature swings you can feel.
OpenTherm is a communication standard that lets a compatible thermostat and boiler talk continuously rather than just switching a relay. The thermostat tells the boiler exactly how much heat is needed, and the boiler modulates its output to match, running gently for longer rather than firing at full power and stopping. The result is a steadier room temperature and less gas burned to get there.
What you actually get with a smart thermostat
- Control from your phone: adjust the heating from anywhere, not just a wall panel.
- Steadier temperatures: modulating control avoids the overshoot and dip of a basic on/off thermostat.
- Lower gas use: the boiler runs at the output it actually needs, rather than always at full blast.
- Boiler Plus compliance: satisfies the extra measure required on every new combi install, explained in our Boiler Plus guide.
Does your boiler support it?
OpenTherm only works if both the boiler and the thermostat support it. ATAG's own iSense control, fitted on our Standard and Premium packages, is OpenTherm-native, and most major manufacturers, including Worcester Bosch, Vaillant and Ideal, offer OpenTherm-compatible smart controls too. A basic thermostat will work with any boiler, but you'll only get the modulating benefit with a matched OpenTherm pair, which is why we fit ours to work with the boiler it's paired with rather than mixing brands.
Is it worth paying for?
A smart thermostat is a £160 add-on in our instant quote tool. For most households the lower gas use pays a meaningful part of that back over time, on top of the convenience of app control, and it's the neatest way to satisfy Boiler Plus if you want more than the basic programmable control included as standard.
